Darmstadt is an independent city in the south of Hesse. It has about 160 thousand inhabitants, making it the fourth largest city in Hesse after Frankfurt am Main and three other cities.
In the course of World War II, Darmstadt experienced a total of 36 bombing raids, the worst in the so-called „night of fire“ from September 11 to 12, 1944. In total, 99 percent of the old and inner city was destroyed during World War II and 12,300 people were killed.
The title „City of Science“ was awarded to Darmstadt by the state of Hesse in 1997 and recognizes the city’s importance as a center of science and research. A technical university (TU Darmstadt), two universities of applied sciences and numerous public and private science and research institutions are based here.
